Mac mini M6 vs M5 Pro (2026): Which One Should You Buy?

By Alex Carter, Apple & Crypto Analyst at AppleCryptos · Last updated September 12, 2026
The $899 Mac mini with M6 is the right buy for almost everyone; the $1,699 Mac mini with M5 Pro is for people who run large local AI models, edit 8K video or need Thunderbolt 5. The confusing part is the naming: the cheaper machine has the newer chip. Both were announced on 25 August 2026 and ship on 22 September.
Put simply: M6 is faster per core, built on 2nm and has a dual Neural Engine. M5 Pro is older silicon but has more cores, 307GB/s of memory bandwidth versus 170GB/s, up to 64GB of memory and Thunderbolt 5. Buy M6 unless your work is limited by memory bandwidth or port speed.
Below: the full spec comparison, why Apple shipped the generations this way, real workloads where the Pro earns its $800 premium, the price history that turned a $599 Mac into a $899 one, and what both cost when you pay with crypto.
Mac mini M6 vs M5 Pro: specs compared
| Spec | Mac mini M6 | Mac mini M5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Apple price | $899 | $1,699 |
| Process | TSMC 2nm (N2) | TSMC 3nm (N3P) |
| CPU | 12-core | 15-core (5 super + 10 performance), configurable to 18 |
| GPU | 12-core | 16-core, configurable to 20 |
| Neural Engine | Dual 16-core | Single 16-core |
| Memory | 16 / 24 / 32GB | 24 / 48 / 64GB |
| Memory bandwidth | 153GB/s at 16GB; 170GB/s at 24/32GB | 307GB/s |
| Storage | 256GB to 2TB | 512GB to 8TB |
| Rear ports | 3× Thunderbolt 4 (40Gb/s), HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet | 3× Thunderbolt 5 (120Gb/s), HDMI, 2.5Gb Ethernet |
| Front ports | 2× USB-C (10Gb/s), 3.5mm headphone jack | |
| Displays | Two 6K plus one 5K | Three 6K |
| Wireless | Apple N1: Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread | |
| Size / weight | 5 × 5 × 2.0 in, 1.5 lb | 5 × 5 × 2.0 in, 1.6 lb |
One detail Apple did not mention on stage, reported by 9to5Mac: the 16GB M6 configuration runs its memory at 153GB/s, not the 170GB/s figure Apple advertises. You only get the full bandwidth at 24GB or 32GB. If you are buying M6 for anything memory-heavy, that makes the $200 step to 24GB the single most useful upgrade on the sheet.
Why does the cheaper Mac mini have the newer chip?
Apple did the same thing with the 2025 MacBook Pro, and MacRumors' buyer's guide puts it plainly: the more expensive Mac mini is not simply a faster version of the cheaper one. They are different generations of silicon aimed at different bottlenecks.
M6 is the first 2nm Apple chip. It has Apple's new super-core design, which the company calls the fastest single-threaded core in the world, plus a second Neural Engine. M5 Pro is the previous architecture scaled up: more cores, a much wider memory bus, and Thunderbolt 5. MacRumors also reports that Apple has no plans for an M6 Pro at all; the M5 Pro stays the top Mac mini chip until M7 arrives in 2027.
So the question is not "which is newer" but "which bottleneck do I hit". For single-threaded work, app launches, compiling, browsing and most creative apps, M6 is as fast or faster. For anything that streams large amounts of data through memory, the Pro's 307GB/s is the number that matters.
How much faster is the M6 Mac mini than the M4?
Independent benchmarks are not out yet; the machines ship on 22 September. Apple's own claims, from the Newsroom announcement, are the only numbers available and should be read as best-case:
| Apple claim (M6 vs M4) | Figure |
|---|---|
| CPU performance | Up to 40% faster |
| Graphics | 2× faster |
| AI performance | 4× faster |
| Storage | 2× faster |
| LLM prompt processing in LM Studio | 4.8× faster than M4; 13.5× faster than M1 |
| Excel calculation | 1.5× faster than M4 |
For M5 Pro against M4 Pro, Apple quotes up to 4× faster LLM processing, 1.4× faster Blender ray tracing and 1.5× faster Affinity image processing. For context, MacRumors' collected Geekbench 6 data puts the M4 at roughly 3,700 single-core and 14,000 multi-core, and the 14-core M4 Pro at about 22,000 multi-core. Expect the M6 to move the single-core number meaningfully and the M5 Pro to sit well above 22,000 on multi-core. We will update this page when real numbers land.
Who actually needs the M5 Pro?
| Workload | M6 | M5 Pro | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browsing, Office, Xcode, Logic, photo editing | ✓ | Overkill | Single-core speed and 16–24GB are plenty |
| Running a 7B–14B local LLM | ✓ (24GB+) | ✓ | Fits in memory on either; M6's dual NE helps |
| Running a 30B+ local LLM with long context | Struggles at 32GB | ✓ (48–64GB) | MacRumors forum testers report 32GB is "barely enough" and hits a ceiling past ~16k context |
| 8K ProRes RAW, Blender, large 3D scenes | Possible | ✓ | 307GB/s bandwidth and 20-core GPU option |
| External NVMe RAID, Thunderbolt 5 docks | Limited to 40Gb/s | ✓ | TB5 tested at 4,400MB/s sustained writes vs roughly half on TB4 |
| Clustering minis for AI | No | ✓ | Thunderbolt 5 supports mini-to-mini clustering |
| Three 6K displays | Two 6K + one 5K | ✓ | Per Macworld; MacRumors lists three displays for both without the resolution split |
Thunderbolt 5 in practice
The spec sheet says 120Gb/s versus 40Gb/s, which sounds like triple. In real drive tests reported through MacRumors, Thunderbolt 5 enclosures sustain around 4,400MB/s writes and 3,400 to 7,000MB/s reads depending on the drive, roughly double what Thunderbolt 4 manages. If your work lives on an external array, that is the difference between the two minis you will feel every day. If your files live on the internal SSD, you will not notice.
How did the Mac mini get to $899?
This is no longer a budget Mac, as Macworld put it. The base price has risen 50% in under two years, in two steps, and Apple attributed the first to "an unprecedented rise in component costs, particularly RAM."
| Configuration | Oct 2024 (M4) | June 2026 | Aug 2026 (M6 / M5 Pro) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base, 16GB / 256GB | $599 | $799 | $899 |
| 16GB / 512GB | $799 | $999 | $1,199 |
| Pro, 24GB / 512GB | $1,399 | $1,599 | $1,699 |
The upgrade pricing on Apple's configurator is steep in the usual way: 24GB is +$200, 32GB +$400, 512GB +$200, 1TB +$500, 2TB +$1,000 on the M6. On the M5 Pro, 48GB is +$600, 64GB +$1,000, and 8TB adds $3,800.
The honest downsides
The M6 mini keeps Thunderbolt 4 at a price where buyers reasonably expected Thunderbolt 5, and a well-upvoted MacRumors forum thread calls that "not future proof at all for the price." The 16GB model's 153GB/s bandwidth was not disclosed on stage. The enclosure has not changed since 2024, so thermals under sustained load are unverified until reviews arrive. And the two-chip naming genuinely confuses people; one forum reply summed it up as "choosing a Mac is getting so confusing." Apple's own numbers are the only benchmarks available for another ten days, and Apple's numbers are always best-case.
On the M5 Pro side, $1,699 buys 24GB and 512GB, which for the AI workloads Apple is marketing it towards is the configuration most people will immediately want to step up from.
Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro prices when you pay with crypto
We stock both new models, sealed, and accept more than fifty cryptocurrencies. Our prices sit about 8% under Apple's, and every upgrade option is discounted by the same margin so a bigger configuration keeps the same saving.
| Model | Apple | AppleCryptos | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac mini M6, 16GB / 256GB | $899 | $829 | $70 |
| Mac mini M6, 24GB / 512GB | $1,299 | $1,199 | $100 |
| Mac mini M5 Pro, 24GB / 512GB | $1,699 | $1,569 | $130 |
| Mac mini M5 Pro, 64GB / 2TB | $3,499 | $3,234 | $265 |
| Mac mini M4 (2024) | $899 (was $599) | $599 | $300 |
That last row deserves a look. Apple now sells the M4 mini at the same $899 as the M6, which makes the M4 pointless from Apple directly. Sealed M4 stock at $599 is a different proposition: for browsing, Office and light creative work it remains a very good computer, and it is $230 less than our M6 price. If you need more than any mini offers, the Mac Studio starts at $2,249 with us. Our Mac desktop comparison covers that decision, and buying a Mac with crypto walks through checkout. Payment confirms on-chain and the machine ships sealed with Apple's full warranty.
