iPhone 18 Pro Price, Specs and Whether to Upgrade (September 2026)

iPhone 18 Pro Price, Specs and Whether to Upgrade (September 2026)

By Alex Carter, Apple & Crypto Analyst at AppleCryptos · Last updated September 12, 2026

The iPhone 18 Pro costs $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max costs $1,299 in the US, both $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro models they replace. Pre-orders opened on Saturday 12 September and the phones reach stores on 18 September 2026. The headline upgrades are a 2nm A20 Pro chip, the first mechanically variable aperture on an iPhone, 12GB of RAM and a smaller Dynamic Island.

Put simply: the iPhone 18 Pro is a $1,199 phone with a genuinely new camera and a faster chip inside a body that looks almost identical to last year's. If you own an iPhone 17 Pro, most reviewers say wait. If you own an iPhone 15 Pro or older, this is the generation worth jumping to.

This guide covers confirmed pricing for every storage tier, what actually changed, what Apple quietly left alone, the standard iPhone 18 that wasn't announced, and how the new prices compare with buying a sealed iPhone 17 Pro for crypto today.

How much does the iPhone 18 Pro cost?

Apple confirmed the base prices on stage on 9 September. The full storage ladder below is reported by MacRumors and MacObserver from Apple's online store; the pattern worth noticing is that the higher tiers rose more than the base.

StorageiPhone 18 ProiPhone 18 Pro MaxiPhone 17 Pro (2025)Change at base
256GB$1,199$1,299$1,099 / $1,199+$100
512GB$1,399$1,499$1,299 / $1,399+$100
1TB$1,799$1,899$1,499 / $1,599+$300
2TB$2,399$2,499— / $1,999New tier on the Pro

Two things are easy to miss. The base storage stayed at 256GB — there is no cheaper 128GB model coming back. And the 2TB option, previously reserved for the Pro Max, is now available on the smaller Pro for the first time.

The increase was smaller than analysts expected. TrendForce modelled a $150–200 rise in early September based on memory costs; the actual $100 came in under that, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman characterised it as Apple absorbing part of the cost. Tim Cook, on Apple's most recent earnings call, described the memory market as a "100-year flood." It is worth being precise here: Apple made no statement at the event attributing the rise to tariffs. The tariff denial people quote is from September 2025, a different phone.

What is new in the iPhone 18 Pro?

The changes are real but concentrated in three places: the chip, the main camera and memory. Everything below is confirmed by Apple or reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac from hands-on time.

The variable aperture is the real story

Every previous iPhone has used a fixed aperture. The 18 Pro's main lens opens to f/1.48 for low light and stops down to f/4.0 for sharp landscapes, a four-stop range controlled mechanically rather than by software blur. Engadget and AppleInsider both singled it out in their hands-on coverage as the one feature that changes how the phone shoots rather than just how fast it runs. If photography is why you buy a Pro, this is the upgrade.

A20 Pro and the 2nm process

Apple claims up to 40% better sustained performance over the A19 Pro, which is a larger generational claim than usual and comes from the move to TSMC's 2nm node. Independent benchmarks land after 18 September. The 12GB of RAM matters more than the CPU for most people: it is the gate for the more demanding Apple Intelligence features, and it should keep the phone comfortable for longer.

One modem caveat for US buyers

Most iPhone 18 Pro units use Apple's own C2 modem. MacRumors reports that Pro Max units sold in the United States use a Qualcomm modem instead. Apple has not said why. In practice you are unlikely to notice, but if you specifically want Apple silicon end to end, the smaller Pro is the one that has it everywhere.

What did not change?

This is the part most launch coverage skips, and it is why so many iPhone 17 Pro owners are staying put.

  • Display sizes are unchanged at 6.3 and 6.9 inches.
  • The aluminium unibody with Ceramic Shield 2 carries over; there is no return to titanium.
  • The camera plateau layout is the same, so cases and the silhouette are familiar.
  • The telephoto still tops out at 8x optical. The sensor resolution went up; the reach did not.

Counterpoint Research called this an incremental generation and said the strongest case is for people on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, who would gain two or three years of improvements at once. That matches the tone on r/iphone this week, where the most-upvoted reaction thread is titled "The 18 Pro doesn't seem to have that many upgrades."

Where is the standard iPhone 18?

It was not announced. Apple's supply chain confirmed to MacRumors in June that the non-Pro iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are pushed to the first quarter of 2027. That is the first time since 2011 that Apple has split the flagship launch, and it means the cheapest new iPhone this autumn is the $1,199 Pro. If you wanted a $799 new iPhone this year, the practical answer is a sealed iPhone 17, which we sell for $699.

The other announcement was the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable: a 7.6-inch internal display, the thinnest iPhone ever made, priced from $1,999 to $3,199. Pre-orders open 16 October and it ships 23 October. It is a separate product for a separate budget, and we will cover it when it is in hand.

The honest downsides

At $1,199 the iPhone 18 Pro is the most expensive base Pro Apple has sold, and the 1TB and 2TB tiers rose far more than the headline $100. The design is the third year of essentially the same look. The 8x telephoto has not moved since it arrived. And the split modem situation in the US is untidy for a company that spent years telling us the point of Apple silicon was control. None of this makes it a bad phone. It makes it a phone for people who need what changed, not everyone who wants what's new.

iPhone 18 Pro vs buying an iPhone 17 Pro with crypto

Every September the previous Pro becomes the value play, and this year the gap is unusually wide. We stock sealed, unlocked iPhone 17 Pro models and accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, Monero and more than fifty other coins. The prices below are what you pay today.

PhoneApple (new, launch price)AppleCryptos (sealed)Saving vs 18 Pro
iPhone 18 Pro 256GB$1,199——
iPhone 17 Pro$1,099 at launch$899$300

iPhone 17$799 at launch$699$500
iPhone 17e$599 at launch$529$670

The iPhone 17 Pro has the same 6.3-inch display, the same 8x telephoto and the same aluminium body as the 18 Pro. What you give up is the variable aperture, 4GB of RAM and the 2nm chip. For $300, plus the ability to pay in crypto without a bank in the loop, that is a trade a lot of people will take. Payment confirms on-chain, the box is factory sealed, and the phone carries Apple's full warranty. If you do want the 18 Pro itself, we will list it as soon as sealed stock is available after 18 September. Check the shop or the iPhone category.
